South Caufield, Victoria
The Central Shule Chabad is a purpose built synagogue for the greater South Caulfield Jewish Community. Fundamentally this building is about diaspora, movement and the journey; the coming together of people/community (the congregation) from varied backgrounds and experiences but with a shared origin. By utilizing a central foyer space, the building is separated into daily and weekly services and general congregation activities; it enables the design to function as a community building, accommodating various uses at any one time. The main worship space accommodates 800 seats and surrounds a central double height volume, where filtered clerestory glazing and clear skylights have been used to define the space. Materials such as the stone façade & variegated limestone floors were sourced from Israel and provide a physical memory of the shared history.
